I-17 Black Canyon
Project Card
Jomax Road to SR 101 Agua Fria TRAC # H706102
RTP Phase 1 Project Description The project widened about four miles of Interstate 17 between Loop 101 and Jomax Road from two lanes to three general purpose and one HOV lane in each direction. All lanes were paved with rubberized asphalt. Four existing bridges were widened and two new bridges were constructed. The landscaping of I-17 between Loop 101 and State Route 74 installed irrigation, new plants and ground cover. In addition, landform graphics were created along the corridor.
Project Benefits Traffic flow improved on this heavily traveled section of Interstate 17, and because it was paved with rubberized asphalt, traffic noise was reduced and drivers have a smoother ride. After the completion of the widening of I-17 (Black Canyon Freeway) in the north Valley, landscaping was the final phase of the freeway improvements made in this area. The landscaping was chosen to provide a cohesive aesthetic throughout the corridor.
